Employment Law 101 for Human Resources Employees

This hybrid live/webinar series is geared toward professionals who are newer to the human resources field or feel like they need a refresher. During the series, Labor & Employment attorneys Tara Walker and Carolyn Liegner will provide three classes on relevant laws and best practices in three critical areas.

Session 1: Leave and Benefits – Wednesday, February 28th, 2:30 p.m. (1 hour 15 minutes)

During this session, Tara and Carolyn will discuss state and federal laws and regulations related to paid and unpaid leave in the workplace. Topics will include the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), as well as Maine’s new Paid Family and Medical Leave Act. Participants will leave this session with an understanding of what is required under each of these laws and how to update employment forms and related processes to meet these requirements.

Session 2: Addressing Accommodations for Employees – Wednesday, March 6, 2:30 p.m. (1 hour 15 minutes)

During this session, Tara and Carolyn will provide an overview of the Maine Human Rights Act (MHRA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how requests for accommodations are made. This session will also cover best practices in responding to requests for accommodation, what you can and cannot ask, including how to deploy an interactive process and when requests may be approved or denied.

Session 3: Employee Discipline and Workplace Investigations – Wednesday, March 13, 2:30 p.m. (1 hour 15 minutes)

During this session, Tara and Carolyn will cover best practices in conducting investigations into workplace discrimination and harassment. Participants will leave this session with an understanding of how to:

  • Develop the right investigation scope and approach.
  • Document investigation activity.
