Statement Denouncing Attacks in our Nation’s Capital

We all witnessed with sadness and outrage the horrific and shameful events that took place in our nation’s capital on January 6. The insurrectionist mob that invaded and desecrated the United States Capitol, incited by political leaders and fueled by conspiracy theories and lies, sought to disrupt our nation’s orderly and peaceful transfer of power and undermine our constitution and the rule of law. Sadly, at least five people have died, including one police officer defending our democracy in the line of duty.

We condemn these violent actions. This assault struck at the very heart of our democracy, as well as the fundamental principle that we are a “nation of laws, not of men.”

The sanctity and primacy of the rule of law must be defended against those who would rule instead with violence, those who would engage in sedition rather than respect our democratic processes.

All responsible should be arrested, charged, tried in courts of law and, if convicted, brought to justice. The rule of law must be preserved and protected at this pivotal moment in the history of our nation; the future of our democracy requires nothing less.
