Portland Council Votes to Continue General Assistance for Asylum Seekers

Shareholder Jamie Broder was quoted in a June 24 Portland Press Herald article on the city council decision to continue providing General Assistance to asylum seekers. During the three-hour public hearing, nearly all in attendance urged the council to continue providing support for the 900 residents by increasing the city budget and using surplus.

While a few in attendance, including some council members, were concerned about the increase in taxes, Broder spoke in support of using Portland’s “rainy day” funds for aid. “Amendments to fully fund General Assistance are critical to the heart and soul of this city,” he said. “If you don’t think this is a rainy day for asylum seekers, you haven’t put yourself in their shoes.”
