Miller Receives University’s Chesley H. Husson, Sr. Award for Dedication to Higher Education & the State of ME

Portland and Augusta, ME and Manchester, NH (May 30, 2013) – Charles E. Miller, Bernstein Shur CEO and senior member of the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group, was  honored with Husson University’s Chesley H. Husson, Sr. Award on May 18 in Portland, ME. Miller also delivered the 2013 commencement address to more than 100 graduating students.

Founded in 1898, Husson University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in sciences and humanities. The award Miller received is presented in memory of Chesley H. Husson, Sr., the first president of Husson University. An educator, leader and entrepreneur, Husson was dedicated to higher education and the state of ME. The university chose to honor Miller because he reflects these ideals and has pursued these values throughout his professional career and through service to the broader community.

Miller, a real estate and business law attorney, has been with law firm Bernstein Shur since 1979 and has served as the firm’s CEO since 2003. His multi-state practice incorporates all elements of real estate law, including the acquisition, disposition, financing, leasing, management and development of real estate. He also focuses on business planning, including asset and stock sales and purchases, investment banker selection, formation of partnerships and other business structures.

Under his leadership the firm has promoted an environment that encourages collegiality, diversity and service in the community, with pro bono hours totaling more than 2,900 in 2012. In 2009 he was appointed co-chair of Lex Mundi’s International Women’s Initiative Leadership Task Force to help improve women’s participation in leadership roles within law firms. He is devoted to diversity in the legal system, and took part in New England’s first conference aimed at encouraging high school students to pursue a career in law.

A resident of Portland, ME, Miller received his BA from Colby College, his M. Ed. from the University of ME and his JD from the University of Maine School of Law. Prior to attending law school he spent seven years as a teacher and debate team leader at Lawrence High School. He is recognized by Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers for his work in real estate law and is AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell.
