AI is quickly becoming part of everyday business operations, prompting leaders to focus on implementing it effectively and responsibly.

That was a central theme during a recent panel discussion at the Roux Institute featuring Bernstein Shur CEO Kaveri Subbarao Nauhaus and other business leaders exploring how AI is changing the way organizations work, serve clients, and develop talent. The discussion was moderated by Quincy Hentzel of the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Kaveri was joined on stage by IDEXX CEO Mike Erickson and President of Sun Life U.S. David Healy.

Drawing on Bernstein Shur’s experience as one of northern New England’s largest law firms, Kaveri discussed the firm’s approach to integrating AI into both legal practice and business operations. She emphasized that successful adoption requires secure technology, clear governance, ongoing training, and a culture that encourages experimentation.

“AI is a powerful tool, but it doesn’t replace human judgment,” said Kaveri. “The opportunity is to use it to amplify our capabilities, create efficiencies, and allow people to focus more of their time on the work that delivers the greatest value.”

The conversation explored how organizations are using AI to support decision-making. Kaveri noted that even small efficiency gains can have a meaningful impact when multiplied across an organization.

She also highlighted the importance of investing in people alongside technology. As AI tools continue to evolve, Bernstein Shur is focused on helping attorneys and professional staff build confidence using new technologies in ways that strengthen client service while maintaining the firm’s standards for quality and security.

The panel was part of the Roux Institute’s ongoing work to convene leaders from across industries to examine the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies.
