Bernstein Shur Hosts Free Nonprofit Business Seminar

Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, is offering a free seminar covering the key elements of operating a nonprofit organization on Thursday, October 2nd. The seminar, “Tools & Tips for Nonprofits,” will address risk management, insurance, compensation and benefits, and governance, and will discuss the role that tax-exempt status plays when addressing these concerns.

Presenters include Bernstein Shur attorneys George Burns, Willette Elder and Steve Gerlach and will be held at the firm’s Portland office at 100 Middle Street in Portland.

George Burns is a member of the firm’s Construction, Business, and Litigation Practice Groups. George serves as general counsel to many trade associations and other non-profit organizations, with particular focus on antitrust compliance, corporate structure, insurance, and risk management.

Willette Elder is a member of the firm’s Business Practice Group and has a focus on general corporate law and tax. She advises individual and business clients on for-profit and nonprofit entity formation, governance issues, business transactions and tax planning, including obtaining and maintaining federal tax-exempt status. Elder has assisted clients with issues related to sales and use taxes and exemptions, income taxes, and navigating various compliance requirements and restrictions imposed by the IRS.

Steve Gerlach is a Chambers-rated ERISA attorney and a member of Bernstein Shur’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. He represents businesses and nonprofit employers in matters of executive compensation, employee benefits, the Affordable Care Act and ERISA.
