Ron Schneider talks Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ on ME Calling

Shareholder Ron Schneider was featured on the June 25 episode of MPBN’s ME Calling Book Club, hosted by Keith Shortall, to discuss Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. He was joined by Sanford High School English Teacher Sandra Thompson and Bowdoin College Professor and Writer-in-Residence Anthony E. Walton. Ron offered his perspective on Atticus Finch as Tom Robinson’s defense attorney, noting, “He stands up for an innocent individual, which is the hardest thing a defense attorney can do.”

“Everyone goes to law school as an idealist,” he quipped. “You learn later that you can’t change the world.”

This was Ron’s second time on ME Calling. The themes he values most in the book are ethics, conscience, and morality, all represented in the struggle of one man to do the right thing. Atticus tells the truth, knowing that he will not and perhaps cannot win, because to do otherwise would cost him his integrity, which is the cornerstone of his existence and his relationship with his children.
