Nine Bernstein Shur Attorneys Honored for Pro Bono Work

ME Supreme Judicial Court’s Katahdin Counsel Encourages Lawyers to Provide Services for Low-Income and Elderly Residents

Portland and Augusta, ME and Manchester, NH (November 27, 2012) – Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, announced the selection of nine attorneys for the Katahdin Counsel Recognition Program.

The Katahdin Counsel was created by the ME Supreme Judicial Court to recognize the pro bono work done by ME lawyers and to encourage lawyers to provide legal services for ME’s low-income and elderly residents. Attorneys must complete more than 50 pro bono hours in a year to qualify for the program, placing them in the top tier of those donating legal services.

“It’s terrific that so many of our attorneys find a way to dedicate significant time and energy serving those in need,” said Charles Miller, Bernstein Shur’s CEO. “We take pride in our longstanding reputation for providing leadership in the community through our volunteer work and pro bono legal services, and are honored to see our attorneys named Katahdin Counsel.”

The following Bernstein Shur attorneys have been honored as Katahdin Counsel:

Eben Albert-Knopp of Portland, ME
Travis Brennan of Portland, ME
Ken Lehman of Cumberland, ME
Fred Lipp of New Gloucester, ME
Arnie Macdonald of South Freeport, ME
Halliday Moncure of Brunswick, ME
Jack Montgomery of South Freeport, ME
Ellen Palminteri of Portland, ME
John M.R. Paterson of Freeport, ME

About Katahdin Counsel

The Katahdin Counsel Recognition Program is intended to honor ME’s lawyers who provide pro bono representation, and to help meet the unmet need for civil legal representation by increasing the number of attorneys who voluntarily provide pro bono representation. The program was named after Mt. Katahdin, ME’s highest peak. The power of Mt. Katahdin parallels the power of bringing justice to those who, but for the generosity of ME’s pro bono attorneys, would otherwise not have meaningful access to justice.
