Devlin Brings Deep Finance Expertise to Firm

Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, announced the return of Christopher J. Devlin to the firm’s Business Law Practice Group.

Devlin is a highly-regarded finance and commercial lending attorney with more than 25 years of experience. His practice will focus on all aspects of commercial finance on behalf of both borrowers and lenders, including secured and unsecured lending, construction loans, and asset-based credit facilities. Devlin was formerly a shareholder at Bernstein Shur from 1993-2005, and he will return as a shareholder in the firm’s Portland, ME office.

Devlin has most recently served as Managing Counsel at Unum Group, where he led the legal team responsible for Unum’s approximately $45 billion investment portfolio, consisting of publicly-traded bonds, private placements, private equity investments and commercial mortgage loans.  He is the co-author of The ME Commercial Lending Handbook, the only book-length guide to commercial lending in ME, has authored or contributed to numerous other publications, including Commercial Lending Law, a State-by-State Guide and The Law of Guaranties, A Jurisdiction-By-Jurisdiction Guide to U.S. and Canadian Law, and has taught commercial lending law at the University of Maine School of Law.

Devlin earned his JD from Boston College Law School and his BA from Vassar College. He is admitted to practice in the State of ME and is a fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and the American College of Mortgage Attorneys. He resides in Portland, ME with his wife Julia and their three children.
