Portland, Maine, December 12, 2011 – Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, is pleased to announce the addition of attorney Mary Costigan to the firm’s energy, environmental, municipal and regulatory practice groups.
In her new position at the firm, Costigan will focus on municipal law, environmental permitting and compliance; she will represent municipalities as well as private clients in matters at the local, state and federal levels.
Prior to joining Bernstein Shur, she served as associate corporation counsel for the City of Portland, providing legal advice and representation for staff and the City Council on a wide variety of municipal matters. Costigan also served as the president of the Long Creek Watershed Management District Board, which oversees the implementation of the storm-water management plan for Long Creek.
In addition to her experience in the municipal sector, Costigan also served as deputy attorney general in the environmental section at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, where she gained experience in environmental permitting and compliance, with a focus on air-quality permitting.
Costigan received her J.D. and master’s degree in environmental law in 1997 from Vermont Law School. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware in 1994, where she majored in political science. A resident of Falmouth, Costigan serves on the board of directors for Falmouth Land Trust.
