Attorney Kate Knox Named 2014 Outstanding Alumna Award Recipient

Recognized by Women’s Law Association at University of Maine School of Law

Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, announced that Kate Knox was honored as the 2014 Outstanding Alumna Award Recipient by the Women’s Law Association at the University of Maine School of Law on December 2nd. Knox is a 2004 graduate of ME Law.

The Women’s Law Association formed to recognized achievements of female attorneys and the impacts of gender on the profession of law. They encourage networking among women at the law school and women practicing in the legal community. Each fall, the WLA receives nominations from students, faculty and staff, and selects one alumna for her outstanding contributions to the legal community. There is a reception is held to honor the recipient, as well as raises money for the WLA fellowship, which is awarded every spring to a ME Law student who chooses to spend his or her summer working in furtherance of women’s rights in an unpaid capacity.

Knox is a shareholder and chair of the Political and Legislative Practice Group. Her practice focuses on lobbying, campaign compliance and election law. Knox advises clients on all aspects of campaign finance laws, including government ethics requirements, political action committee formation and governance, ballot question campaigns, and she drafts legislation and administrative rules. She also represents a wide variety of clients before the ME State Legislature.

Knox is recognized in Best Lawyers in America for her work in government relations. She was named one of ME’s “up and comers” for her efforts in the historic passage of ME’s Marriage Equality Bill, and in 2010 and 2014 she was nominated as a “Partner in Pride” by the ME Democratic Party. She is an adjunct professor at ME Law. Knox earned her JD from University of Maine School of Law, her MSW from University of ME School of Social Work, and her BS from Skidmore College. She is a resident of Portland, ME.
