Amanda Meader Appointed to Maine’s Animal Welfare Advisory Council
November 5, 2010

Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, announced today that associate Amanda Meader has been appointed to the Animal Welfare Advisory Council (AWAC) by Governor Baldacci. Meader will serve the council as an attorney with experience in animal welfare law.

The council assists Maine’s Commissioner of Agriculture with matters involving the Animal Welfare Program (AWP).  “Amanda’s legal expertise will be a valuable addition to the council and the AWP as we work to ensure that animals in Maine are protected through communication, education and enforcement,” said Norma Worley, director of the AWP.

As one of the council’s 12 members, Meader will review and advise the commissioner on issues involving animal welfare laws and rules. She will also assess training programs for humane agents and animal control officers and investigate avenues to raise revenue for the Animal Welfare Fund.

According to Meader, the appointment provides an ideal opportunity to combine her legal expertise with her dedication to ensuring the well being of animals. “I look forward to working with the council to ensure compliance with animal protection policies and implementing changes that will improve the quality of life for the animals of Maine.”

Meader is a member of the municipal and regulatory practice group at Bernstein Shur. She is currently a member of the Maine State Bar Association, the Kennebec County Bar Association and the International Municipal Lawyers Association. Meader earned her J.D. in 2004 from Cornell Law School and holds a B.A. from Bates College, where she graduated magna cum laude in 2001.
