PORTLAND, Maine – Forty-one Bernstein Shur attorneys have been selected by their peers to be recognized in the 2009 edition of “The Best Lawyers in America®.”
Inclusion in the 2009 edition of “The Best Lawyers in America” is considered a top honor as less than three percent of the nation’s lawyers are chosen by their peers to be listed in the guide. Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers“the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”
Best Lawyers ranked Bernstein Shur #1 in Maine in 17 categories, among them are: Administrative Law, Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Law, Construction Law, Corporate Governance and Compliance Law, Land Use & Zoning Law, Municipal Law, Natural Resources Law, Professional Malpractice, Real Estate Law, and Timber Law. In New Hampshire, Bernstein Shur was ranked #1 in Labor and Employment Law.
“We are not only proud to once again increase our number of attorneys recognized by Best Lawyers, we are also proud to have increased our #1 ranked practice areas by over 400 percent,” said Charles E. Miller, the firm’s Managing Shareholder. “This reinforces our standing as one of northern New England’s premiere multi-service law firms,” he added.
With 41 shareholders selected from the firm, Bernstein Shur topped its previous record of 39 lawyers in the last edition of Best Lawyers. In all, more than 70 percent of the firm’s principals made the list. Bernstein Shur has over 90 attorneys in Maine and New Hampshire.

The nationally recognized list, which has been published since 1983, is now published each year by Woodward/White, Inc. of Aiken, South Carolina. To compile the list, over 25,000 attorneys across the U.S. were asked to rate the abilities of other lawyers in their areas of specialization. Only those attorneys who earned the consensus support of their peers were included in the listings; inclusion cannot be purchased. For this reason, selection in the Best Lawyers is considered a reliable and valued recognition.
