Katherine Joyce is a member of the Energy and Environmental Practice Group at Bernstein Shur. She focuses her practice in environmental permitting and compliance, particularly as it pertains to power generation facilities, large-scale commercial development, real estate remediation, solid waste, water, and air pollution issues, including existing and developing regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. Kat is also an active member of the firm’s “Green Team” which provides clients with the full range of legal services necessary to accomplish small and large-scale “green” development projects. Kat also serves in the firm’s Wind Energy Group, focusing on the permitting elements of wind developments.
Kat represents clients in various matters involving federal and state agencies, including the Department of Energy, the Department of Justice, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. She has obtained, transferred and amended state and federal permits on behalf of large power generating facilities. She is experienced in coordinating complex due diligence efforts, permit applications, permit transfers, and negotiating resolution of significant compliance issues.
Kat is the Chair of the Maine State Bar Association Natural Resources Section. Prior to practicing law, Katherine’s research and legal internship opportunities addressed a wide range of environmental issues, from European green tax structures to the development of a layman’s guide to Maine environmental laws. She also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Ocean and Coastal Law Journal (2002-2003) and received an Academic Achievement Award for her coursework in environmental law.
